Q:When is the EMT class?

A:The 2017 Basic EMT class begins January 3th with an orientation. The Class Starts in January 4th 2017 and continues though May. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm - 10pm and 1 Saturday/Month.  The Practical (aka the psychomotor exam) in early May and you could be a certified EMT by June.

Q: How much does it cost?

A:Tuition for the class is $1,500. There is a $200 non-refundable registration fee that can be applied to the tuition. There are also testing fees of $250. Included in this price are all books a “lab kit” containing a blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, online study resources and more. There is the possibility of sponsorship through island ambulance services. If accepted for sponsorship, most services will pay the tuition in exchange for a commitment to that service, typically 4 shifts a month for a year. There is some financial commitment on your part until you successfully complete the course and become a member of good standing in your town’s squad. Sponsorship applications are available from the squad coordinators. Course fees may be paid via credit card.

Q:Is the material hard?

A:It’s no cinch, but what you learn could save a life! The reading and lectures are fairly simple. You have to study. You will have online resources that will be very helpful.

Q:Do I need to live in the town in order to take shifts?

A:EMT shifts are from 8am–6pm and from 6pm–8am. Most services require you to be in the town for which you are on duty so living in town helps.

Q:Can I be an EMT in more than one town?

A:YES! Island towns share EMT’s all the time. You must be a certified Massachusetts EMT and in good standing with your affiliated ambulance service.

Q:Do I get paid for being an EMT?

A:Vineyard EMT’s are volunteers, but most squads pay a stipend for each shift. Each town will usually offer seasonal paid positions.

Q:     Is there a way to get help outside of class?

A:     Yes, we have trained mentors to help anyone who would like additional support.
